SOLO PIANO Radiohead Songbook

Pre-orders available in August/September, 2018

Dear Radiohead fan,

A couple years ago, I started filming improvised solo piano arrangements of some of my favourite Radiohead tracks on my YouTube channel. I thought nothing of it at the time, but what started as a passion project that had been laying dormant in my mind for many years, has somehow, through the wonders of the internet, escalated into receiving approval from Radiohead's management to publish my own songbook of these arrangements.

As the book nears completion, I thought I'd compile a list of questions to give you an insight into my background, the process, and when you'll be able to get your hands on a copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Okay. First and foremost, when are the pre-orders and when will it be available?
I'm aiming to accept pre-orders in August/September this year, and I'm anticipating that copies will be available to purchase in November in time for Christmas, 2018.

How do I get notified about the pre-orders?
Best to sign up to my mailing list:

Why is the book taking so long?
Outside of working full-time and managing my music schools, I'm recording an album with some long-term friends, so my time is fairly limited at the moment. It also takes a huge amount of time to transcribe these improvised arrangements.

Can't you just send me the sheet music you have right now, you jerk?
The thing is, I'm not playing notated arrangements on my YouTube channel. They're improvised renditions that are often played and arranged by ear. The sheet music doesn't currently exist and that's probably one of the reasons as to why you're here reading this right now.

Wait a second, if the sheet music doesn't exist, how do you do it? What's the secret?
Pretty much this:

Seriously, how can I play at your level? What's the process?
Firstly, it's important to note that I have been playing and teaching the piano for a very long time. I started when I was seven and worked my way through the classical grades. I spent a great deal of time playing awful pop tunes on the side from the classical repertoire and I eventually started playing at shopping centres, weddings, parties, and a host of other functions. I also studied a Bachelor of Music, majoring in jazz piano and improvisation, so that makes this whole process substantially easier for me.

With the amount of time I have spent on the instrument, I can loosely arrange most tracks by ear. When I want to be more precise or I feel more pressure to really nail it, I do the following:

– Listen to the tune heeeaps.
– Look for any sheet music that is currently available and use that as a rough guide.
– I sometimes then create my own lead sheet, which involves boiling down the song to just a melody and chords.
– I then rebuild the tune using my own style, trying to find sections which can be expanded on to enhance the piece (intros, outros, solos, etc.).
– There's often a final re-listen to the original track, to make sure I haven't strayed too far.

Why Radiohead?
My love for Radiohead started when I was in my late teens, when one of my closest friends introduced me to OK Computer. I've been hooked ever since and even organised a sold-out tribute night to the band with a 24-piece ensemble at the Old Melbourne Gaol, literally playing on three levels simultaneously. Their music also translates really well on to the piano, so I've always been drawn to their compositions.

Will the sheet music be available as digital single sheets or available through digital sheet music suppliers?
At this stage, the sheet music will be exclusively available as a hardcover publication, most likely through my own web store. Individual copies of each track won't be for sale.

Will I need to take out a small loan to pay for this book?
I'm really not entirely sure what price the book will be, as there's a number of very expensive costs comprising of design, artwork, licensing fees (both for the rights in the book and the synch licences on my YouTube channel), music engraving, production expenses, and not to mention my time. It won't be dirt cheap, but shouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Will you be shipping to my country/planet?
I'll be shipping the songbook worldwide. Best speak to Elon for rocket rates, if you're jumping ship and thinking about making the move to the Red Planet.

I want to give you money, but I'm not entirely sure how to do it.
It's super easy. I've set up a Patreon page, for those wanting to show their appreciation and to help me cover the synch licence fees for my YouTube clips.

How do you get the camera in that position on your YouTube channel?
If I told you, I'd have to kill you.

What piano do you use?
It's a Kawai RX-5.

Do you teach / offer online lessons?
If you're in Melbourne, Australia, you can contact the admin team at my music school. At this stage, I don't really have time for online lessons. If you would like me to hit you up for some lessons when I travel to your neck of the woods, best email me.

Where can I hear you play?
The plan is to tour the songbook in Europe and the USA in 2019. If you're interested in booking me, please send through an email. I'm also on the hunt for some decent artist management in both continents.

I really like your other interpretations. Do you plan on releasing sheet music or songbooks for other artists?
I would love to, but I'm just a little busy at the moment. I think it would be best to see how much traction the Radiohead songbook receives before moving on to the other artists. I'd probably need to find a more efficient system to expedite the process too.

Do you enjoy asking yourself questions?
I was home sick today, so it definitely helped kill some time.

TL;DR
I'll be taking pre-orders probably in August/September for a November release. Sign up to my mailing list to get notified.
